Breechloader, Gallagher single shot percussion carbine, Early Production, .50cal. . Gallagher carbine employed a unique loading system whereby the barrel slides forward during loading and utilized a percussion cartridge initially made of paper, later brass version had a hole in the bottom. Manufactured by Richardson & Overman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was patented by a South Carolinian before the war, but produced under Federal contract. Marks on lock GALLAGHER / PATENTED JULY 17TH 1860 / serial number. Standard features include: iron buttplate, iron patchbox, iron forstock with no bands, loading lever also serves as trigger guard, hinged sight, saddle bar and riding ring on the left side, six lands & grooves. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
