Breechloader, Gallagher single shot percussion carbine, Early Production, .50cal. . Gallagher carbine employed a unique loading system whereby the barrel slides forward during loading and utilized a percussion cartridge initially made of paper, later brass version had a hole in the bottom. Manufactured by Richardson & Overman, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was patented by a South Carolinian before the war, but produced under Federal contract. Marks on lock GALLAGHER / PATENTED JULY 17TH 1860 / serial number. Standard features include: iron buttplate, iron patchbox, iron forstock with no bands, loading lever also serves as trigger guard, hinged sight, saddle bar and riding ring on the left side, six lands & grooves.
