Breechloader, Jenks single shot smoothbore percussion carbine, 1845, converted to rifled 1860's, .54cal. . Jenks carbine was called the mule ear, this referred to side hammer and breech block lever giving the appearance of ears. This actually was a clever early breechloader, made for the Navy, initially designed as smoothbore, most were converted to percussion in the 1860's, Manufactured by N P Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts, using Jenks design. Marks on lockplate N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS and to the rear, Wm. JENKS. Marks on the barrel breech Wm. JENKS / USN / RP / P 1845 . Inspector cartouche in the wood on the left side. Standard features include: brass buttplate, brass trigger guard, two brass bands, distinct mule ears hammer and breech release, single strap ring on underside, rifled with six lands and grooves.
