Breechloader, Smith single shot percussion carbine, cavalry model with saddle bar, MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS, .50cal. . Smith carbine utilized a paper or rubber cartridge and employed a unique loading system, the barrel swivels downward like a shotgun upon release by a latch underneath. Manufactured by American Machine Works, Springfield, Massachusetts, Poultry and Trimble, Baltimore were selling agents. All marks appear on the left side in three panels, manufacturer mark, MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS, appears on left side forward panel horizontal stamping, selling agent mark, ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE, U.S.A., appears in the upper side of the rear panel, and the patent date, SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857. will appear in the lower underneath of the saddle bar and is difficult to read. Serial number appears twice on the bottom. Standard features include: iron buttplate, single iron barrel band, saddle riding bar and ring on left side, latch on top of barrel with release on bottom, hinged sight, six lands & grooves. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
