Breechloader, Starr single shot percussion carbine, Starr, .54cal. . Starr carbine was breech loading percussion, utilizing a paper cartridge, the chamber is loaded by lowering a lever on the underside secured by a hinged latch. This weapon actually tested better than Sharps but was only bought in limited quantity, about 20,600 were manufactured 1862 to 1865. Manufactured by Starr Arms Co., Yonkers, New York. Mark on lock STARR ARMS CO. / YONKERS, N.Y. Serial number is visible when the loading lever is extended. Cartouches on the wood on the left side indicate government inspection, additional inspector mark on lock, and barrel. Standard features include: brass buttplate with squared tang, iron loading lever doubles as a trigger guard, single brass band, single leaf hinged sight, saddle ring on left side is attached to a small hook, 5 lands and groove rifling. Marks on top of barrel STARR ARMS CO. YONKERS N.Y.. Mark on rear of breech STARR'S PATENT. / SEPT. 14th 1858.
