Five shot percussion revolver, Colt Model 1849 pocket, round cylinder , 4in barrel, address New York, .31 cal. . Colt, Model 1849 pocket revolver was a percussion fired five shooter, .31 caliber, it was the most popular of the Colt revolvers, it could be concealed or easily carried and was popular for self defense both by civilians and military. Revolver was manufactured by Colt Firearms, Hartford Connecticut. Marks: Top of barrel is marked - ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U. S. AMERICA -. Left frame is marked COLTS / PATENT and trigger guard is marked 31 CAL. Cylinder is marked with a stage coach scene, which is usually weak. Matching serial number, appears seven times, underneath on both sections of frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder (last five digits, wedge (five digits), and inside on cylinder pin (four digits). Serial numbering began at 1 and continued to approximately 280,000 by the end of the Civil War. Standard design employed octagonal barrel, creeping style loading lever, barrel and cylinder held in place and easily removed for loading by releasing removable wedge, three screws, cylinder is round, rotation controlled with notches, brass trigger guard and back strap, walnut grips.
