Left frame is marked COLTS / PATENT Additional mark US means it was US Navy inspected. Cylinder was marked with a Naval scene, which is usually weak or worn away. Serial number appears seven times, underneath on both sections of frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, wedge, and inside on cylinder pin. Additional inspector marks may be found on trigger guard and other parts. Standard design employed an octagon barrel, creeping style loading lever, barrel and cylinder held in place and easily removed for loading by releasing removable wedge, three screws, rounded cylinder with notches, rounded brass trigger guard, brass back strap, walnut grips. Research Center: Weapon4123-Revolver-Colt-36cal-Model-1851-Navy . Reference: Flayderman 5B-053. Artifacts attributed to John Pendleton Grove, ancestor of Nathan Shreve Spitler. Artifacts include revolver with holster, sword belt with two part Louisiana sword plate, and other items. Tentative research is attached, the soldier was a member of a Virginia cavalry unit but apparently was utilizing a belt manufactured for a member of a Louisiana unit. The sword belt plate is photographed and described Plate 275, page 152, Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates, Expanded Edition, by Steve E Mullinax.. Research Center: Weapon4123-Revolver-Colt-36cal-Model-1851-Navy . Reference: Flayderman 5B-053. Additional inspector mark on trigger guard. Matching serial number, appears seven times Metal appearance pleasing with clean grey patina, wood grips solid with usual dings and scratches from use, cylinder scene is very strong, mechanics fully functional. This weapon was recovered from the Seever House, 230 W Boscawen St, Winchester Virginia. It was found hidden inside the walls and was discovered during renovations in the 1990's. The house was used as union General Banks headquarters in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and it was owned by the Seever family, of which at least one son served in the Confederacy. The family had long since passed not knowing or not telling anybody of the gun, it could have been left by one of Banks men, it could have been hidden by the occupants during the war, it could have belonged to the Confederate veteran and hidden after the war during reconstruction, the full story is not likely to be determined. Additional mark 2 with each serial number, this is a factory mark but purpose has not been definitely determined, it may have been sold as part of a pair.
