Non commissioned officer sword, Model 1840, Roby, 1863. . The model 1840 non commissioned officer sword was intended for sergeants and were ceremonial in purpose, being used to convey rank and to signal movement in drills. The sword could be used in a fight, but only as a weapon of last resort. Manufactured by Christopher Roby Company, Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Marks: ricasso, C. ROBY. / W CHELMSFORD MA (early circled address), and US / 1863 / FSS, additional inspector stamping on hilt, and on scabbard drag. Standard features include: all brass handle, grip gives the appearance of wire wrap but is integral with the handle, guard is made from two plates unadorned, hilt is single branch. Scabbard for Roby is usually leather with brass mountings, however many were replaced with more durable iron scabbards. Research Center: Weapon5340-Sword-Army-Officer-NCO-Model-1840-Roby-1863 . These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
