W0781 ### Medical officer sword, Model 1840, W H Horstmann. . The model 1840 sword for medical. officers was strictly ceremonial. It bears MS on the guard (Medical. Staff) Manufactured by Horstmann Philadelphia Marks: blade is etched: W H HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA. Standard features include: brass handle, blade is etched with patriotic symbols. Scabbard is brass with ornate brass mountings. Research Center: Weapon5411-Sword-Army-Officer-Medical-Model-1840-Horstmann . Reference: Thillmann Army Swords, pg 149. Blade length, 28.5in. Sword and scabbard intact, handle has a slight wiggle.

These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
