Dragoon Saber, Model 1833, Ames 1835. . The model 1833 dragoon saber was closely modeled after the similar British model 1821. Sword was introduced with the three branches on the hilt, this feature appears on all later versions of the cavalry saber. Manufactured by N.P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts. Marks: ricasso is engraved in hand script style NP Ames / Cutler / Springfield, 1835, inspector initials JM appear close to the guard, other side of blade is inscribed United States. Scabbard is iron, two riding rings, throat is secured with two rivets on the narrow side. Drag is marked with inspector mark HKO / ORD. Standard features include: brass cover is fitted on top of Grip, grip is lead covered and wrapped in brass wire. Quillion is distinct scroll. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
