Cavalry saber, Model 1840, officer, P D Luneschloss. . The model 1840 saber was a relatively heavy cavalry saber and was called the wrist breaker, this officer model featured additional adornment those issued to enlisted. Manufactured by P D Luneschloss, Solingen Prussia. Marks: ricasso is marked PDL. The officer sword intended for the American military is etched with US and other patriotic symbolism. Standard features include: steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso. Brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are adorned with floral designs. Handle is wood with a slight curve, covered with sharkskin and a grip of twisted brass wire. Iron scabbard with iron mountings, throat is secured by a rivet and is typical of European origin.
