Cavalry saber, Model 1840, officer, P D Luneschloss, James P Fitch New York. . The model 1840 saber was a relatively heavy cavalry saber and was called the wrist breaker, this officer model featured additional adornment those issued to enlisted. Manufactured by P D Luneschloss, Solingen Prussia. The officer sword intended for the American military is etched with US and other patriotic symbolism. Marks: ricasso is marked PDL. Etching on ricasso, JAMES P. FITCH / 19 JOHN ST. / NEW YORK. James Fitch was a military goods supplier for Schuyler in 1862 and 1863. Standard features include: steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso. Brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are adorned with floral designs. Handle is wood with a slight curve, covered with sharkskin and a grip of twisted brass wire. Iron scabbard with iron mountings, throat is secured by a rivet and is typical of European origin.
