W0688 ### Navy officer sword, Model 1852, Schuyler. . Naval officers exercised wide latitude in specifying much of the specific artistic details of the swords they purchased, this is why there seems to be endless variations of them. Common amongst most of the Model 1852 Navy officer swords is an ornate brass guard and basket showing Navy symbolism, USN cast amongst various leaves and nuts, the pommel is adorned with leaves with a serpent head on the quillon. Manufactured not determined, this was marketed by Schulyer Hartley Graham, New York. Marks: ricasso is stamped SH&G / NY brass inlay on the ricasso. This is Schuyler Hartley and Graham, who operated a military goods catalog from which officers often ordered arms or accoutrements. Blade is etched (faint) with patriotic and Naval designs. Standard features include: grip is wood covered by sharkskin with brass wire. The steel blade has a rounded top, and is cut with a wide and narrow fuller stopped at the ricasso, along with a very narrow decorative unstopped fuller at the upper edge, etching with anchors, and other Naval symbolism. The scabbard is leather, sharkskin covered with brass fittings.
Research Center: Weapon7121-Sword-Navy-Officer-Model-1852-Schuyler . Blade length, 27in. Sharkskin wrap and wire grip original, blade clean, etching is weak, scabbard is also sharkskin with brass mountings, shape and design is unconventional.Since this private retailer was not subject to Federal inspections, sword cannot be dated definitely.

All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied
