Navy cutlass, Model 1860, Ames, banner style address, 1862. . The Navy cutlass was intended for general use as ship defense, the sword is relatively short to allow for fighting in close quarters. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Marks: ricasso AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS banner address, and USN / (inspector) / 1862. Numbers stamped on the guard are Ames serial numbers. Standard features include: wide brass sheet brass guard designed to give extra protection to the sailors hand, grip is leather and often the wire wraps were removed, blade has sharp curve, flat top, single fuller not stopped, scabbard is leather secured with brass rivets and a finial to hang on a frog, there is no throat. Grip has leather wrap intact, this one may not have had wire or it was intentionally removed, leather washer intact,leather scabbard and frog intact.

All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
