W1437 ### Confederate cavalry saber, Memphis Novelty Works, Leech & Rigdon. . The Confederates liberally followed the Model 1840 wrist-breaker designs, using features such as the handle with with slight curve, and hilt with three branches, otherwise there is much variation. This pattern, is attributed to Thomas Leech and Charles Rigdon, Memphis Novelty Works, Memphis Tennessee. Manufactured by Thomas Leech and Charles Rigdon, Memphis Novelty Works, Memphis Tennessee Standard features include: guard is crudely cast and marked MEMPHIS / NOVELTY WOTRKS / Thos Leech & Co. Pommel has contours similar to the Federal pattern. Handle has single curve, and is wrapped with a very tight rope of some type, and this could have been re-wrapped during its use. Blade has no fullers. Scabbard is iron with brass mountings, iron throat. Research Center: Weapon7561-Sword-Confederate-Memphis-Novelty . Reference: Albright Confederate Swords pg. 119. Blade length, 34in. Blade appearance is dark maker marks are definite, scabbard intact with smooth brown patina. Sword was bought from Lookout Mountain Museum, when it was closed.

These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment should be applied.
