It is pre civil war and good.I did not have that backmark, and it is not in any of the lists, nobody ever traced him as he was not a button maker or a tailor, so I researched him. He was a Gold & Silver Laceman, they made very high end stuff for officers and the court, he held Warrants from the prince of Wales for most of his solo career It was made between 1837-1858, by Charles T. Webb, a Gold & Silver Laceman, Maker and Seller of Uniforms, accouterments, gold Lace & Etc. About 1859 he partnered with John Bonella, and the firm name was Webb & Bonella at the same address, they are noted as suppliers of Belt buckles to the confederacy. As a matter of fact, the rarest and most valuable plate ever sold was made by them sold for about $80,000.I found him in listing as c. Webb from 1837-1852, did not have the complete run but then found an auction listing for the belt buckle that put his joining with Bonella at 1859. The firm carried on after his death in 1862, all the way to the 1880s or 1890s as Webb & Bonella, his sons took over after his death.   |
