Kentucky was admitted to the Union in 1792, as the 15th state. Although Kentucky was a border and slave holding state, it never declared for either side. Kentucky symbolism employed two Kentucky gentlemen shaking hands.

The school was orginally organized in 1780 as a Presbyterian seminary, later operated as Transylvania College operating a medical school up to the Civil War. After the Civil War it merged with Kentucky University,which became Kentucky's land grant college, and later reclaimed it's orginal name, becoming Transylvania University which operates today.
