Maryland was one of the original thirteen colonies, authorizing the Constitution April 28, 1788. Maryland was a slave holding state, but located north of Washington. The Lincoln administration seized control preventing secession. Loyalties were mixed and militia units from Maryland served both causes. Maryland symbolism employed eagle over a shield with a farmer and fisherman.
