Rifled artillery projectile, Archer design, Confederate manufacture, solid bolt, short pattern with flat tip nose and short tapered base, lead band sabot, Confederate rifle, 3 in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured following the general designs of Junius Archer. A lead band sabot was cast onto the projectile secured by concentric grooves cast into the base of the shell. This pattern was cast with distinct flat top, lead band sabot, two deep grooves to hold the sabot, a substantial knob was left on the bottom below the sabot. Production of this pattern was limited, it appears to have been experimental and development moved to longer patterns with more grooves. Projectile measures: diameter 3.0in., length 5.75in. (excluding fuze), weight 8.3lb. Research Center: Artillery3112-Archer, Ref: Dickey & George, Field Artillery (1993 Edition), pg. 77.
