Rifled artillery projectile, Blakely design, Confederate manufacture, bursting shell, bourreleted ringed short pattern, copper cup sabot secured with rectangle post, wood fuze, Confederate rifle, 3in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured and is believed to have derived from an English design, that of T. A. Blakely. The sabot system utilized was a thick copper cup, secured to the shell by an internal post. This pattern utilized two bourrelet rings, rounded nose, interior may be segmentedto facilitate fragmentation. A lathe dimple in the base, and a casting sprue on the nose are usually noted. Fuze employed was a wood time fuze, Jones Fuzes pg. 2, fuze hole is smooth and tapered, the simple to make fuze couldeasily be hammered into place.
