Rifled artillery projectile, Blakely design, Confederate manufacture, bursting shell, pattern with smooth sides, copper cup sabot secured with rectangle post, wood fuze, Confederate rifled 6 pounder or 20 pounder, 3.67in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured and is believed to have derived from an English design, that of T. A. Blakely. The sabot system utilized was a thick copper cup, secured to the shell by an internal post. Shell is smooth sided, rounded nose, interior is segmented in star shape to facilitate fragmentation. A lathe dimple in the base, and a casting sprue on the nose are usually noted. This pattern may have been Confederate experimental, it would have been difficult to manufacture and used a lot of copper, which was in short supply, consequently its use was limited. Fuze employed was a wood time fuze, Jones Fuzes pg. 2, fuze hole is smooth and tapered, the simple to make fuze could easily be hammered into place. Projectile measures: diameter 3.6in., length 9.25in., excluding the fuze, weight not determined. Research Center: Artillery3322-Blakely, Ref: Dickey & George, Field Artillery (1993 Edition), pg. 132.
