Civil War Artillery
by Harry Ridgeway

Research Center: Artillery4821-ParrottConfederate
Rifled artillery projectile, Confederate adaptation of Parrott sabot design, Confederate manufacture, long pattern with smooth sides, brass band sabot,Confederate time fuze, 30 pounder 4.2 in.
Projectile was Confederate manufactured but utilizing many similar Federal Parrott design features. The smooth sides and notched base are very similar to the Federal design. Confederate developments include a lathe dimple on the bottom, rounded nose, the shell was finished on a lathe, most Federal Parrott shells are finished using a forcing die, there are 10 notches in the base (most Federal designs of this caliber have 8), and the sabot, which is missing on this example, is much heavier than the Federal counterpart. Shell is rare pattern and example pictured in Bells book was unfired with a flawed sabot covering the base. Fuze employed is likely the Confederate copper time fuze, but is not positively determined. Projectile measures 4.15 in, length 11.75 in.(without sabot), weight 26 lbs.

Metal solid. Projectile is disarmed, open fuze hole exposes interior. Recovered: Fredericksburg, Virginia not confirmed.
