Parrott zinc watercap fuze
Fuze was manufactured in the Federal arsenals using Parrott's design, the Navy watercap fuze employed a crooked channel so that the flame would travel faster than the water. The fuze consists of an outer threaded bushing, the fuze is threaded into the bushing, the watercap mechanism is threaded inside the fuze, so there are three sets of threads! Originally covered with a lead pull tab, this was removed before firing. This Parrott fuze is made of zinc. Fuze generally intended for large caliber Parrott shells fired from ships. Fuze measures: length 3in., diameter1.1in., flange diameter 1.3in., 12 threads per in.

Parrott time fuze, no flange
Fuze was manufactured in the Federal arsenals using Parrott's design, time fuze was made of a white metal compound, primarily zinc and lead, fuze was installed and tightened with two spanner holes. This relatively simple fuze was activated by setting a paper fuze in the center hole, the paper would ignite upon firing, burn time would be predetermined by the concentration of flammable product in the paper fuze. This early version did not have a flange, problems developed with gases leaking around the threads causing some premature detonations and eventually flanges were added to better seal the fuze. Primary use of these fuzes was for Parrott field caliber projectiles, however they were also found on larger calibers. Fuze measures: length 1.35in. to 1.7in., diameter 1.1in., 12 threads per in.

Parrott zinc percussion fuze, "West Point" style two part fuze.
Fuze was manufactured in the Federal arsenals using Parrott's design, percussion fuze was made of a white metal compound, primarily zinc and lead, fuze was installed and tightened with two spanner holes. A slider with nipple for percussion cap was independently placed in the throat of the shell, the fuze hole was sealed with a threaded cap, on impact the slider would slam into the cap and detonate. It is hard to see this working effectively, and this system was abandoned fairly early in the process in favor of the "one part" fuze, which integrated all the moving parts into a single unit. Fuze dimensions vary and some have small flanges to seal against gas leaks and some do not.
