A1740...Parrott zinc time fuze, with rounded flange. Fuze was manufactured in the Federal arsenals using Parrott's design, time fuze was made of a white metal compound, primarily zinc and lead, fuze was installed and tightened with two spanner holes. This relatively simple fuze was activated by setting a paper fuze in the center hole, the paper would ignite upon firing, burn time would be predetermined by the concentration of flammable product in the paper fuze. This version features a rounded top with flange added. A leather washer was installed under the flange, this was designed to minimize gas leaks around the fuze which caused some premature detonations. Primary use of these fuzes was for Parrott field caliber projectiles, however they were also found on larger calibers. Fuze measures: length 1.76in., diameter 1.1in. flange diameter 1.3in. , 12 threads per in. Ref: Jones Fuzes pg. 77, upper left. |
A1093...Parrott zinc time fuze, with flat flange. This version features a flat top with flange added, shank is partially threaded, bottom section is recessed and not threaded. A leather washer was installed under the flange, this was designed to minimize gas leaks around the fuze which caused some premature detonations. Primary use of these fuzes was for Parrott field caliber projectiles, however they were also found on larger calibers. Top of flange is marked "W", Parrott operated out of West Point Foundry. Fuze measures: length 2.5in., diameter 1.1in. flange diameter 1.3in. , 12 threads per in. Ref: Jones Fuzes pg. 77, upper right. |
A2135...Parrott zinc percussion fuze, "West Point" style two part fuze. Fuze was manufactured in the Federal arsenals using Parrott's design, percussion fuze was made of a white metal compound, primarily zinc and lead, fuze was installed and tightened with two spanner holes. A slider with nipple for percussion cap was independently placed in the throat of the shell, the fuze hole was sealed with a threaded cap, on impact the slider would slam into the cap and detonate. It is hard to see this working effectively, and this system was abandoned fairly early in the process in favor of the "one part" fuze, which integrated all the moving parts into a single unit. Fuze dimensions vary and some have small flanges to seal against gas leaks and some do not.Fuze measures: rounded top flanged head, head diameter 1.25 in., height .8 in. Recovered: Richmond, Petersburg, Virginia campaign. Ref: Jones Fuzes pg. 79 & 80. |
A2136...Parrott zinc percussion fuze, "West Point" style two part fuze. Recovered: Richmond, Petersburg, Virginia campaign Ref: Jones Fuzes pg. 79 & 80. |
