B6454 Civilian "livery" button, palmetto tree with snake, one part button, Charles Jennens London, (26mm) The English aristocracy often provided "uniforms" to service employees, the "butler" and "livery" people in charge of the transportation system. Buttons provided will often bear animals, or scenes from the natural environment, and are usually quite large in size. This button is one part and depicts the palmetto tree with a snake, and is very high quality artistic design and manufacture construction. This could have been commissioned for somebody important in South Carolina, such as a governor or other wealthy plantation owner, it also could have inspired the "Palmetto Guard" buttons which depict a similar figure. This button is thought to be civilian, although the similarity with South Carolina patriotic symbolism is striking. Collection of Chris Todd.
