Confederate officer button, eagle facing right with upright wings, CS in shield, one piece low convex, Confederate wartime manufacture, (24.3mm) Button depicts eagle with wings in upright position, intended for Confederate officers, southern wartime manufacture, a "local". This die pattern features eagle facing right with 13 stars, "CS" in the shield, on a one piece convex design, was a likely copied from an 1830's patriotic design on a flat button, the die was poorly executed, and seldom is the detail sharp. Backmark: blank brass back, high convex one piece stamped button, weak impression of die face will appear on back, applied shank was spot brazed or soldered and will be weak or missing, (BlankSouthern220). B0759... Confederate enlisted button, eagle facing right with relaxed wings lined field with 13 stars, southern wartime manufacture, blank with channel, (15.4mm). Plain back, button was made by C Rouyer, this was intended for a small size button for an enlisted jacket, not an officer sleeve button. No large sizes were made with this motif. There is coat in The Museum of the Confederacy identified to a private which bears this button down the front of the jacket . Button depicts 13 stars. It is a wartime button, but follows the 1840's style when small buttons were frequently used to fasten the jacket front. Reference: Albert CS25B Tice CS269As1.1. B0846... Maine button, state seal husbandman and seaman with white pine, officer, "E. HALFMAN (sic) /MONTGOMERY "dm, (14.7mm). Button depicts the state seal of Main, the north star with a husbandman and seaman standing beside a white pine, intended for officers of Maine militia units. Backmark: "E. HALFMAN (sic) /MONTGOMERY "dm. This is an example of a Scovill production error. Scovill had a contract to produce AVC buttons for Alabama subcontract under Halfmann, a Montgomery Alabama tailor. First they misspelled the name. Then they used the backs left over for these Maine buttons! The Maine militia probably did not send an inspector so they got away with it! Button depicts the state seal of Main, the north star with a husbandman and seaman standing beside a white pine, intended for officers of Maine militia units. Backmark: "CANFIELD BROS.CO/ BAL", dm. Scovill mismatched back. Scovill had contracts for Maryland and Virginia buttons, subcontract under Canfield, apparently these backs were left over and Scovill used them for a contract with Maine.
