B5853...Virginia state button,Virtus slaying the tyrant with sword up, low convex one part, "YOUNG. SMITH & CO / (star) New (dot) York (star)" rm, (21.7mm) Button depicts Virginia state seal, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for Virginia troops. This design of the state seal with the sword and spear both pointed upward was prevalent in designs before the war. This die variant features a small ball on the spear, no dots in the legend, and backmark with stars dividing. Backmark: "YOUNG. SMITH & CO / (star) New (dot) York (star)" rm, between two rings of dots, 1830s one part flat button, (Young.110). One part low convex button, coat size. Nondug button. Reference: Albert VA2A, Tice VA105A1.
