Backmark: HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY dot dm between two solid rings, inner ring of rays, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860, coat size. Note that the length of the inner rays may appear to vary. If a button is shanked without pressing a well, then the rays remain at the full length, if a well channel is pressed then part of the rays will be pressed into the well and appear to be shorter. It is thought that this was done when the button was shanked, and is not actually a variant in the die. Two part button, coat size, 21mm.

Backmark: SCOVILLS & Co (dot under the o). / (dot) EXTRA (dot) dm between two solid rings, (outer ring may be obscured in the crimping), made in small size only. Backmark apparently was designed during the 1840's, however most use seems to have occurred during the 1850s and 1860s during the era of Scovill Manufacturing, the Scovills & Co name from an earlier period was used as a way to abbreviate the name to fit the space on a small button. Two part button, hat or sleeve size, 15mm.

SMITH & CO / (star) NEW - YORK (star) rmdc on a stippled field, area around the shank is raised, Scovill manufacture 1840 - 1858. Note: some examples with this backmark seem to have a raised area around the shank, this may have been caused during assembly and may not be a variant in the die. Also the dash between New and York may appear weak on some examples, this is likely debris in the die or wear as it appears to actually be present on all examples. Two part button, coat size, 20mm to 21mm.
