Chasseur buttons for Massachusetts, New York, or Pennsylvania.
Buttons were made in France and may have been issued to 49th New York, 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry, 3rd Regiment Excelsior Brigade, 18th Massachusetts, 83rd Pennsylvania, 62nd Pennsylvania. The uniforms were a gift from France and were awarded as result of a review, along with tall shako style hats. The uniforms and hats proved unsatisfactory and many were either discarded at Brandy Station or returned to stores.

Backmark: CordierFreres/ PARIS rm between solid rings, white metal one part button, concave back, French supplied by Henry et Antione Cordier ca 1862. One part convex button, coat size, 23mm.
