Button5678-NewYork-UlsterGuard-NY271-Horstmann332 New York button, Ulster Guard. Backmark-Horstmann332 New York militia organization, Ulster Guard New York Volunteer Infantry 80th regiment, Ulster County, New York. Backmark: HORSTMANN & CO / (dot) NY dot dm between two solid rings, inner ring of rays, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860, small size. Note that the length of the inner rays may appear to vary. If a button is shanked without pressing a well, then the rays remain at the full length, if a well channel is pressed then part of the rays will be pressed into the well and appear to be shorter. It is the opinion of the author that this was done when the button was shanked, and is not actually a variant in the die. Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size, 14mm to 16mm.
