Smoothbore flintlock musket, Model 1816, Remington conversion to rifled musket using Maynard system percussion, 1858, .69cal. . The Model 1816 was originally designed as a flintlock muzzleloader, .69cal. smoothbore, manufactured from 1816 through 1844. Remington Arms was given a contract to supply primer locks and percussion bolsters using the Maynard priming system. The conversion was performed at Frankfort Arsenal, and was well advanced from the other systems being developed at the time. The entire breech was cut off, and a new percussion nipple was installed, with a clean out screw, this design was eventually used with the Model 1861 muskets to follow. New locks were supplied using the Maynard tape priming system which was also being developed in parallel with the Model 1855. The new long range sight being developed for the Model 1855 was installed. The old smoothbore barrels were rifled. Conversion to percussion performed by Remington Arms, at Frankfort Arsenal. Marks: Lock is marked REMINGTON'S /ILION NY / 1858 / US behind the hammer, no marks in front. Barrel is marked US P, other inspector marks, breech tang date is 1858. Additional inspector cartouche on the wood opposite the lock. Buttplate is marked US. Model features: Iron buttplate is straight against the shoulder, iron strap opposite the lock, iron trigger guard, no rear sight, two iron barrel bands, two strap hooks with button or cylindrical swivel, large iron nose guard serves as third band and forward sight, bayonet lug on top of barrel at muzzle, steel ramrod is button head and threaded. The butt stock features a very low comb, which is the graceful curve between the butt and the wrist of the stock. Research Center: Weapon1203-Musket-Model-1816-Remington-1858 .
