Plate7399-Confederate-Oval-161-FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, CSA oval buckle, Mullinax illustration 161. Mullinax illustration is example from Virginia Historical Society, and was the only example noted. Now two variations of this pattern have showed up, the die details do not match the VHS pattern but are the same on both patterns. Gary Williams has privately warned collectors about this pattern, however his civil warfakes.com website makes no mention of any examples of this pattern. So did he make these or not, these were not made with the techniques Hanover Brass typically employs. It should also be added that the manufacturing technique does not seem to match any other production of Confederate plates in general. There is lead filling on the back of this plate, but it is not clear if this is covering a casting or if these hooks have been independently imbedded in the plate. So the fact does remain that two of these plates have shown up and are different from anything we have seen before and Gary Williams does seem to know something about them. So are they real or not? Experts have examined at least one of these plates and did not reach a conclusion.

Plate7399-Confederate-Oval-997-FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, CS oval plate. Plates in this cast could be loosly considered Confederate regulation pattern, however they are not copied from any of the period plates. These plates are supplied to living history market by the thousands, and are probably the most common used. Easy to make, fresh dies were cut of US and CS, the simple block letters are much easier to cut than the more complex eagles and other designs that employ more detail. The sutlers that provide these make both US and CS in parallel, they are typically lead filled, available both as buckes or boxplates, or the empty skins can be bought and you make up your own idea for attachment, the possibilites are endless. At any event, where the living history sutlers are present, most of them will have for sale many expamples of this plate, they are very popular and available.

Plate7399-Confederate-Oval-998-FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate oval, CS or CSA oval, bullet struck plates. Typical fakes are usually die struck and lead filled plates (verus cast), this because it is easier to pucnch a hole through thin sheet and lead than through a casting. Most employ fake plates to start with. The bullets often are real, but these are cheap and easy to come by. Any machine shop or auto body shop will have a supply of punches capable of making a hole. Some fakers do try to shoot the plate, but you have to be a pretty good shot to do this and space and distance are variables that are hard to regulate/
