Rifled artillery projectile, Parrott design with Confederate adaptation, Confederate manufacture, solid bolt, pattern with flat nose smooth sides, copper high band ring sabot, Confederate rifle, 3in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured during the war apparently an attempt to copy Parrott design This pattern utilized a flat top and smooth sides with a high band sabot similar to a bolt manufactured for the north. The casting is extremely crude and bears a prominent casting sprue on the bottom. Projectile measures: diameter 2.95in., length 6.25in. (excluding fuze), weight 8.1lb. Projectile measures: diameter 2.83in., length 5.875in., weight 8.1lbs. Research Center: Artillery4811-ParrottConfederate, Ref: Dickey & George, Field Artillery (1993 Edition)., not listed. Rifled artillery projectile, Confederate adaptation of Parrott sabot design, Confederate manufacture, long pattern with smooth sides, brass band sabot,Confederate time fuze, 30 pounder 4.2 in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured but utilizing many similar Federal Parrott design features. The smooth sides and notched base are very similar to the Federal design. Confederate developments include a lathe dimple on the bottom, rounded nose, the shell was finished on a lathe, most Federal Parrott shells are finished using a forcing die, there are 10 notches in the base (most Federal designs of this caliber have 8), and the sabot, which is missing on this example, is much heavier than the Federal counterpart. Shell is rare pattern and example pictured in Bells book was unfired with a flawed sabot covering the base. Fuze employed is likely the Confederate copper time fuze, but is not positively determined. Projectile measures 4.15 in, length 11.75 in.(without sabot), weight 26 lbs. Research Center: Artillery4821-ParrottConfederate, Ref: Bell Heavy Ordnance, pg. 282. Rifled artillery projectile, Confederate adaptation of Parrott sabot design, Confederate manufacture, solid bolt, long pattern with bourrelet rings and blunt nose, Confederate Brooke rifle, 7in. Projectile was Confederate manufactured following design features from the bolts with bourrelet rings and blunt nose, but adapting the Parrott designed sabot system. The bolt with slightly rounded blunt nose and bourrelet rings was a design intended to challenge the Federal ironclad, and this body design was employed on several patterns by Brooke, Tennessee, and Broun. The sabot system is virtually identical to the Parrott high band notched system, flat bottom, nearly squared notches along the outer edge, with a high band ring sabot. So far none of these shells have been recovered with the band sabot intact, but the notching size and shape is very close to the high band sabots used on Parrott 100 pounders. Projectile measures: diameter 6.9in., length 12.5in. (no sabot), weight 101lbs. Research Center: Artillery4831-ParrottConfederate,Ref: Bell Heavy Ordnance, pg. 304.
