Navy symbolism, fouled anchor, use for junior Naval officers began around 1840, but most bear post Civil War backmarks. British Navy also used this design and British marks could signifiy either American or Engish military. Civilian use of naval themes are also popular and those with fancy designs are likely meant for civilian use.
